Evaluating the Impact of a Community Based Physical Activity Intervention

Principal Investigator: Elva M. Arredondo, PhD
Project Funding Period: 09/01/2011 – 08/31/2012
Project Funding Source: Comprehensive SDSU-UCSD Cancer Center Partnership

Summary:
There is a low prevalence of physical activity in Latinas, which likely contributes to the high rates of chronic diseases including cancer in this community. With funding from the National Cancer Institute through the Comprehensive SDSU-UCSD Cancer Center Partnership the goals of the current study are to 1) Examine the impact of a promotora-based intervention on different measures of body composition 2) Examine the impact of a promotora-based intervention on different measures of adipokines (leptin, adiponectin) 3) Assess the impact of physical activity on body composition 4) Examine the influence of physical activity on adipokines 5) Determine if changes in body composition due to physical activity mediate the association between physical activity and adipokines in a sample of San Diego Latinas. The proposed study will link biomarker data to a larger multi-level community trial promoting physical activity in Latinas.
