Center for Research on Sexuality and Sexual Health (SASH)

SASH brings together a multidisciplinary group of faculty, students, and participating scholars engaged in sexuality and sexual health research. By conducting multidisciplinary, community-engaged, and collaborative research, training, and health promotion focusing on diverse priority populations, SASH aims at reducing disparities and inequities related to sexuality and sexual health.

South Bay Latino Research Center (SBLRC)

IBACH’s collaborative efforts are highlighted by the NIH-funded South Bay Latino Research Center. Led by Dr. Talavera, the SBLRC is a tri-lateral collaboration between SDSU, UCSD, and SYHC that seeks to promote and expedite research to improve chronic diseases (cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity) outcomes in Latinos living in the border region of San Diego. Together, these organizations are working to build on existing partnerships to conduct rigorous, community-based epidemiologic, behavioral, and genetic research in an effort to reduce disparities for disadvantaged populations, and at the same time provide improved service to the community, answer important biomedical questions, build research capacity in the community, and stimulate and train investigators in CVD disparities.

An exemplar of this effort is the landmark Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), the largest epidemiological study of Latino health funded by NHLBI. HCHS/SOL is a multi-site, multi-disciplinary epidemiologic study of 16,000 adult Hispanics/Latinos to determine the role of acculturation in the prevalence and development of disease, and to identify factors playing a protective or harmful role. SDSU/IBACH and UCSD, led by Drs. Talavera (PI) and Elder (Co-PI), together comprise one of four field centers and a coordinating center funded as part of this study. The San Diego Field Center and collaborating universities bring significant expertise to this national effort to understand better the underlying risk and protective factors associated with racial/ethnic health disparities, including but not limited to diabetes, heart disease, and asthma and other lung disorders.
