Summary
The purpose of this pilot study is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of an intuitive eating intervention on decreasing weight and improving health outcomes among Latina women living along the U.S.-Mexico border in South San Diego County.

The term “intuitive eating” refers to a nutrition philosophy that focuses on teaching individuals to eat what appeals to them and satisfies their hunger, without overeating. It emphasizes avoiding any preset diets and eating for reasons other than hunger including environmental, social, or emotional reasons.

As a part of the intervention participants will attend 1.5-hour sessions about intuitive eating once a week for 10 weeks. These classes will be instructed by promotores who have been trained to deliver the intervention. Seven promotores will be recruited, trained and will lead two groups of 15-20 Latina women. Fifty adult Latinas who are residents of San Ysidro, Chula Vista, or Imperial Beach will be recruited to participate in the study and will attend the classes to be provided at various schools and community locations throughout South San Diego County.

Participants will complete anthropometric measures, blood pressure assessment, and a face-to-face interview at baseline, and again at 3- and 6-months post baseline.  The primary outcomes of the study are BMI, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Secondary outcomes include fat intake, depression, and sleep. This study will analyze within subject changes in measured and self-reported outcomes from baseline to 3 and 6 months post baseline.
