Summary
PIC Health’s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of Pacific Islanders through community driven and culturally tailored programs aimed at reducing health disparities. Our goal is to inform the development of culturally-relevant strategies for health promotion using a mixed-methods, community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. Beginning with a qualitative phase, key informant interviews and focus groups provide information for best practices in the recruitment of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), introducing research into the community, and cultural concepts for strategies to engage the community. Furthermore, qualitative methods will be used to understand health practices and behaviors, cultural beliefs around health, culturally sensitive methods to conduct research in the community, the acceptability of using specific measurement tools and procedures. Informed by the qualitative phase, a quantitative survey will be developed and administered within the NHPI community in San Diego. Importantly, these research efforts are guided by a NHPI research advisory board made up of community members and leaders. Together, our academic-community partnerships support the development of health programs to reduce health disparities in the Pacific Islander community.
