Dr. Schiaffino is a health services researcher and epidemiologist specializing in population health, organizational theory, GIS, SNA, and cancer quality outcomes. She earned her PhD in health services research at the University of Florida (2014) where she studied the effect of social-spatial context associated with disparities in the delivery of high-quality language service delivery in hospitals. Her research areas of interest are hospital organizational structure, health system disparities, organizational cultural competence, leadership, social-spatial context, and care delivery fragmentation on cancer outcomes. Dr. Schiaffino has expertise in community partnerships to reduce cancer disparities in breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer in Latinos and African-Americans.

She is currently studying the effect of fragmentation in the delivery of care attributable to process factors like language services, coordination of care, and other factors on clinical and patient outcomes and overall quality of care, in particular she is looking at provider networks and head and neck cancer outcomes. Her research integrates or seeking to integrate tools that include location-based social networks, surveys, and cultural competence informed by organizational theory and systems science. Dr. Schiaffino’s work has been published in high-impact journals including Health Affairs and the Journal of Infectious Diseases as well as national media in addition to invited presentations both locally and mostly recently at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She is also interested in collaborations both nationally and internationally, some organizations include the Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM), Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica (INSP).
